Relapse Records — RR 6682-1
The original 2004 US vinyl pressing is generally regarded as dynamic and punchy, though some note the brickwalled-era sourcing limits its ceiling.

Leviathan was recorded at The Echo Lab in Atlanta, Georgia in 2008 and released in 2009. The album was produced by the band themselves alongside Brendan O'Brien, a renowned producer known for his work with AC/DC and Pearl Jam. The recording process utilized analog and digital techniques, with the band focusing on creating a heavier, more cohesive sound compared to their previous work. Leviathan marked a significant point in Mastodon's career as their most commercially successful and critically acclaimed release to date, establishing them as major figures in progressive metal. The album's concept was loosely inspired by Herman Melville's Moby Dick, influencing its thematic direction and ambitious musical arrangements.
