Metallica

Master of Puppets

First released

Master of Puppets was recorded at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles from February to August 1985, marking Metallica's first collaboration with producer Flemming Rasmussen, who would become integral to their sound throughout the 1980s. The album was engineered by Rasmussen alongside Mike Stone, utilizing analog recording technology and the studio's renowned facilities to capture the band's heavier, more polished sound compared to their debut. The production process emphasized tight musicianship and precise drum recording, with Lars Ulrich's drums recorded separately to achieve the punchy, defined tone that became characteristic of the album. This was a transitional period for thrash metal as a genre, with Master of Puppets benefiting from increased production budgets and studio time that allowed for more sophisticated arrangements while maintaining the raw intensity of the band's music. The album's commercial and critical success upon its 1986 release established Metallica as leaders of the thrash metal movement and demonstrated that the genre could achieve mainstream production standards without sacrificing heaviness.
