Bad — Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

Bad

First released

Bad was recorded between 1986 and 1987 primarily at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, with additional sessions at One on One Recording Studios and other facilities in Los Angeles. Producer Quincy Jones, who had worked with Jackson on Thriller, returned to helm the project alongside engineer Bruce Swedien, maintaining their successful collaborative relationship. The album featured contributions from various producers including Narada Michael Walden and the pioneering production duo L.A. Reid and Babyface on select tracks. Jackson and Jones employed state-of-the-art digital recording technology and sophisticated drum programming, moving toward a more contemporary sound that reflected late-1980s production techniques while maintaining the pop sensibility that defined Jackson's artistry. The production process was notably intense and meticulous, with Jackson's perfectionism driving multiple takes and overdubs to achieve the sonic character that helped Bad become one of the best-selling albums of the era.
