Bad was recorded between 1986 and 1987 primarily at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, with additional sessions at other Los Angeles studios. The album was produced by Michael Jackson alongside Quincy Jones, who had collaborated with Jackson on Thriller, along with producers including Jeff Porcaro, Marcus Miller, and others. Jackson worked with engineers including Bruce Swedien, who had been his longtime collaborator, utilizing advanced recording technology of the era including digital recording techniques. The production marked a shift toward a harder, more aggressive sound compared to Thriller, with increased use of live instrumentation and drum machines to create a funkier aesthetic. Bad was released in August 1987 and became one of the best-selling albums of all time, establishing many of its songs as cultural touchstones.
