Riley's production style incorporated synthesizers, drum machines, and sampled rhythms that marked a significant departure from the orchestral arrangements of Bad, modernizing Jackson's sonic palette for the early 1990s. The recording process was meticulous, with Jackson known for multiple vocal takes and detailed overdubbing to achieve his desired sound.
