Off the Wall was recorded primarily at Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles between 1978 and 1979, with additional sessions at other LA-based facilities. The album was produced by Quincy Jones, who collaborated with engineer Bruce Swedien and other technical staff to create a sophisticated pop and funk sound that marked Jackson's artistic departure from the Jackson 5. Jones and Jackson employed innovative production techniques including layered percussion, prominent bass lines, and horn arrangements that blended disco, funk, and pop influences. The production choices reflected the late 1970s aesthetic while establishing a template for Jackson's subsequent commercial success, with particular attention paid to vocal tracking and overdubbing to achieve the album's polished sound. Released in August 1979, Off the Wall became a landmark album that demonstrated Jackson's maturity as a solo artist and Quincy Jones's production expertise.
