Columbia — CL 1355

Kind of Blue was recorded at Columbia Records' 30th Street Studio in New York City across two sessions in March and April 1959, produced by Irving Townsend. The album was engineered by Frank Laico, who utilized innovative recording techniques to capture the ensemble's sound with clarity and minimal overdubbing, reflecting the era's studio capabilities. Miles Davis led the sessions with his first great quintet, featuring John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, and the rhythm section of Hank Mobley, Philly Joe Jones, and Jimmy Cobb, though personnel varied slightly between tracks. The recording prioritized spontaneity and live performance feel, with most pieces recorded in relatively few takes, exemplifying Davis's modal jazz approach that moved away from complex chord changes toward improvisational frameworks based on scales. The album's release in 1959 established modal jazz as a major development in modern jazz and became one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time.
