Nefertiti — Miles Davis

Miles Davis

Nefertiti

First released

Nefertiti was recorded at Columbia Records' 30th Street Studio in New York City between June and August 1967, during a transitional period in Miles Davis's career as he moved toward experimental jazz fusion. The album was produced by Teo Macero, who worked closely with Davis to shape the sound through innovative studio techniques and editing. The recording featured Davis's second great quintet, including Wayne Shorter on saxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. Macero employed unconventional editing and overdubbing techniques that were notable for jazz at the time, creating a polished, modern sound that contrasted with the free-form approach of some contemporary jazz. The album's release in 1968 marked an important moment in jazz history, coming at the intersection of modal jazz, free jazz exploration, and the emerging fusion movement.
