Miles Davis Quintet

Relaxin’ With the Miles Davis Quintet

First released

Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet was recorded across multiple sessions between 1955 and 1956 at Columbia Records' 30th Street Studio in New York City, with producer Irving Towbin overseeing the project. The album featured the first great Miles Davis Quintet lineup including John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, capturing the group during a formative period of hard bop development. The recordings were made using the standard two-track tape technology of the era, with engineer Bob Arnold managing the technical aspects of the sessions. The album was released in 1957 and compiled previously unreleased material alongside alternate takes, presenting an informal and relaxed atmosphere that contrasted with the more formally arranged sessions of Davis's earlier work. The natural, conversational feel of the recordings helped establish the album as a landmark in small-group jazz recording, emphasizing the interplay between musicians rather than studio perfection.
