Miles Davis Quintet

Relaxin’ With the Miles Davis Quintet

First released

Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet was recorded across multiple sessions between 1955 and 1956 at Columbia Records' 30th Street Studio in New York City. The album featured Miles Davis's first great quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, capturing the group during a pivotal period of modern jazz development. Producer Irving Townsend oversaw the sessions, which were engineered by technical staff at Columbia's state-of-the-art facility. The recording sessions were part of a larger contractual obligation to Columbia Records, with various tracks recorded across different dates and subsequently compiled for the 1957 release. The album represented an important documentation of the quintet's live repertoire and arrangements during the height of the hard bop era.
