The album featured Miles Davis's first great quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, captured during a pivotal period in the development of modal jazz. Producer Irving Towbin and engineer Fred Plaut oversaw the sessions, which were notable for capturing the ensemble's cohesive interplay and the emerging sophistication of Davis's compositional approach.
