"Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet" was recorded at Columbia Records' 30th Street Studio in New York City during two sessions in 1956, featuring Miles Davis's first great quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. The album was produced by Columbia Records producer George Avakian, with recording engineer Fred Plaut overseeing the sessions. The recordings were part of a prolific period when Davis recorded multiple albums for Columbia using the same core quintet, capturing the group's developing interplay and interpretive approach to standards and jazz compositions. These sessions represented an important documentation of the quintet's live repertoire and established the group's sound during the mid-1950s transitional period between bebop and modal jazz exploration.
