Come On Die Young, released in 1998, was recorded across multiple sessions at different locations including Chateau de Marouatte in France and various Scottish studios. The album was produced by Mogwai themselves along with producer Paul Savage, who would become a frequent collaborator with the band. The band employed a minimalist approach to composition and recording, building tracks gradually through layered instrumentation and focusing on dynamic shifts rather than traditional song structures. The recording sessions were characterized by experimentation with unconventional techniques and an emphasis on capturing organic, natural sounds rather than heavily processed production. The album marked Mogwai's second full-length release and established many of the post-rock characteristics that would define their later work, including extended instrumental passages and emotional crescendos.
