Isn't Anything, My Bloody Valentine's debut album, was recorded between 1985 and 1988 across multiple studios including Strawberry Studios in Stockport and various other locations, with the band working through several lineup changes during production. The album was produced primarily by the band themselves along with engineer John Fryer, who would later become known for his work with industrial and alternative acts. The recording process was notably protracted and expensive due to the band's perfectionist approach and experimentation with guitar textures, layering techniques, and effects processing that would become characteristic of their sound. The album showcased the band's early exploration of shoegaze aesthetics, blending ethereal vocals with heavily processed and distorted guitars, though it predates the full crystallization of the genre that would be defined by their 1991 follow-up Loveless. Isn't Anything was released in April 1988 and became an influential touchstone for alternative rock, establishing many of the sonic foundations that would define 1990s indie and alternative music.
