Loveless — My Bloody Valentine

My Bloody Valentine

Loveless

First released

My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless" was recorded primarily at Cara Studios in London between 1989 and 1991, with additional sessions at Miles Ahead Studios and other facilities. The album was produced by the band themselves alongside engineer Collin Norris, with the production process characterized by extensive experimentation and unconventional studio techniques, including the use of heavily processed guitars and innovative use of drum machines and synthesizers. Kevin Shields pioneered what became known as the "wall of sound" approach, layering and processing guitars through various effects units to create dense, textural soundscapes that defined the shoegaze aesthetic. The recording sessions were notably costly and time-intensive, stretching over nearly two years as the band pursued perfectionism in achieving their sonic vision. Upon its release in 1991, "Loveless" became a landmark album in alternative rock and shoegaze, though the protracted and expensive production process contributed to the band's subsequent hiatus lasting several years.
