Loveless — My Bloody Valentine

My Bloody Valentine

Loveless

First released

My Bloody Valentine recorded "Loveless" primarily at Cara Studios in London between 1989 and 1991, with additional sessions at other facilities including Miles Ahead Studios. Producer and band member Kevin Shields oversaw the recording with engineer Colm O'Ciosoig, employing unconventional techniques such as heavily modified guitars, layered vocals, and extensive use of studio effects and processing to create the album's distinctive shoegaze sound. The production process was notably time-consuming and expensive, with Shields experimenting extensively with guitar tunings, effects pedals, and tape manipulation to achieve the desired sonic texture. The album's creation marked a significant departure from the band's previous work, utilizing state-of-the-art recording technology in combination with creative studio experimentation. "Loveless" was released in April 1991 and became a landmark recording that defined the shoegaze genre and influenced alternative rock production techniques throughout the 1990s.
