Loveless was recorded between 1989 and 1991 primarily at REykjavik's Stonebridge Studios and London's Miles Copeland Studios, with producer Colm Ó Cíosóig and engineer John Fryer overseeing much of the production. Kevin Shields pioneered the use of heavily processed electric guitars, extensive layering, and studio experimentation techniques that pushed the capabilities of recording technology at the time, creating the album's signature shoegaze wall of sound.
