Harvest Moon was recorded at Neil Young's home studio, Redwood Digital, located in Woodside, California, during 1991 and 1992. The album was produced by Neil Young and David Briggs, with engineer John Hanlon overseeing much of the technical work. Young utilized analog recording equipment and deliberately chose to work in a relaxed, intimate setting rather than a commercial studio, allowing him to refine songs over an extended period. The recording process emphasized live, acoustic-based performances with minimal overdubbing, reflecting Young's preference for organic sound. The album marked a return to the stripped-down, folk-influenced style of his 1972 album Harvest, capturing a more introspective mood during a period of personal stability in Young's life.
