Power, Corruption & Lies was recorded primarily at Britannia Row Studios in London during 1982-1983, following New Order's creative breakthrough with the single "Blue Monday." The album was produced by New Order themselves along with producer John Fruin, who brought technical expertise during a period when the band was increasingly confident in their studio abilities. The recording sessions were marked by the band's experimental approach to synthesizers and drum machines, building on the electronic textures they had developed on their previous album. The production benefited from advances in studio technology of the early 1980s, particularly in synthesizer programming and sequencing, which allowed for the complex layered arrangements that characterize the album. Released in May 1983, the album represented a commercial and critical peak for the band and became influential in shaping the sound of synth-pop and electronic rock throughout the decade.
