Skeleton Tree was recorded between 2014 and 2016 at various locations including Woodshed Studios in Brighton and other studios in Australia and Europe. The album was produced by Nick Cave alongside Warren Ellis, with significant contributions from producer Nigel Godrich who worked on several tracks. The recording process was deeply affected by the tragic death of Cave's son Arthur in 2015, which fundamentally shaped the album's emotional tone and thematic content. The production employed a stripped-back, intimate sonic approach compared to previous Bad Seeds work, featuring sparse arrangements and Cave's vocals placed prominently in the mix. The album was released in September 2016 and marked a significant artistic statement during a period of profound personal grief.
