Bryter Layter — Nick Drake

Nick Drake

Bryter Layter

First released

Bryter Layter was recorded at Sound Techniques studio in London during 1970, following the modest reception of Nick Drake's debut album. The album was produced by Joe Boyd, who had also produced Drake's first record, with engineer John Wood handling the technical aspects. The production featured lush orchestral arrangements by Robert Kirby, a significant departure from the sparse acoustic approach of the debut, incorporating strings, woodwinds, and additional instrumentation to create a more elaborate sound. Drake's reluctance to engage in promotion and touring affected the album's commercial performance despite its artistic ambition. The sessions took place during a period when Drake was becoming increasingly withdrawn, though the album itself represents one of his most sonically sophisticated works.
