Pink Moon

First released (1972)

Pink Moon was recorded over just two nights in late October 1971 at Sound Techniques studio in London, with engineer John Wood, who had worked on all of Drake's albums. The album was produced by John Wood, as Drake's usual producer Joe Boyd had relocated to the United States, leaving Wood to handle both engineering and production duties. Drake arrived at the studio unannounced with the songs fully prepared, and the recording sessions were remarkably sparse, featuring almost entirely solo performances of voice and acoustic guitar, with piano overdubs added only to the title track. The minimalist approach stood in stark contrast to the lush orchestral arrangements of his previous album Bryter Layter, reflecting Drake's deliberate artistic choice to strip his music down to its most essential elements. Released on Island Records in February 1972, the album received virtually no promotion and sold poorly at the time, though it has since been recognized as one of the most influential and critically acclaimed folk albums ever recorded.
