Pink Moon — Nick Drake

Nick Drake

Pink Moon

First released

Pink Moon was recorded at Island Studios in London between 1971 and early 1972, during a period when Nick Drake was dealing with depression and personal difficulties. The album was produced by Nick Drake himself along with engineer John Wood, who would later become known for his work with artists like Fairport Convention and Kate Bush. The recording sessions were notably sparse and intimate, featuring Drake's fingerpicked acoustic guitar and vocals with minimal overdubs, reflecting both his artistic vision and the album's introspective mood. The production was deliberately stripped-down compared to Drake's previous albums, with most tracks recorded with just guitar and voice, occasionally enhanced with subtle string arrangements or percussion. Released in February 1972 to limited commercial success during Drake's lifetime, Pink Moon has since become recognized as a masterpiece of intimate singer-songwriter recording and a significant influence on independent and folk music production aesthetics.
