Incesticide — Nirvana

Nirvana

Incesticide

First released

Incesticide was compiled and released by DGC Records in December 1992 as a collection of B-sides, outtakes, and unreleased tracks recorded between 1988 and 1992, rather than a traditional studio album with unified production. The tracks were recorded across multiple sessions at different studios including Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, and various other facilities, with producers and engineers including Steve Albini, Butch Vig, and Craig Montgomery contributing to different recordings. The album served as a stopgap release while Nirvana worked on their follow-up to Nevermind, capturing the band's evolution during a period of unprecedented commercial success and internal tension. Notable for its raw production quality and diversity of sounds, Incesticide featured notably lo-fi recordings alongside more polished tracks, reflecting the band's range from their Seattle underground roots to mainstream success. The compilation was released to satisfy contractual obligations and capitalize on the band's popularity during the peak of the grunge phenomenon.
