The Blues and the Abstract Truth was recorded on March 9, 1961, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, one of the most prestigious jazz recording facilities of the era. The album was produced by Impulse! Records, with renowned engineer Rudy Van Gelder managing the technical aspects of the recording. Oliver Nelson led a sextet featuring Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Bill Evans on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums, with Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone and flute. The session was notable for its tight ensemble playing and Nelson's innovative compositional approach, blending hard bop with modal jazz influences. This debut album for the Impulse! label became one of the label's most acclaimed releases and helped establish Nelson as a significant composer and arranger in jazz.
