Blackwater Park

First released

Blackwater Park was recorded at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden between January and March 2001, with producer Fredrik Nordström who had previously worked with the band on their earlier albums. The recording was engineered by Fredrik Nordström and Niklas Flyckt, utilizing the studio's capabilities to capture both the band's heavy riffing and their increasingly sophisticated acoustic and clean guitar passages. The album marked a significant evolution in Opeth's sound, incorporating more progressive rock elements and cleaner vocal sections alongside their established death metal foundation. The production choices, including the balance between distorted and clean tones, reflected the band's deliberate artistic direction to expand beyond their earlier work while maintaining their technical metal identity. Blackwater Park became one of the most critically acclaimed metal albums of its era and is considered a landmark recording in progressive metal.
