The album marked a significant shift in Opeth's sound toward a more accessible progressive rock direction, moving away from the death metal elements that characterized their earlier work. Recording took place over several months with the band focusing on a more polished production approach compared to their previous albums. The technical and creative decisions during production reflected bandleader Mikael Åkerfeldt's evolving songwriting vision, emphasizing intricate guitar work, orchestral elements, and cleaner vocal performances alongside the remaining harsh vocals.
