Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul was recorded in 1965 at the renowned Stax Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee, under the production guidance of Jim Stewart and Chips Champin, with engineer Tom Dowd contributing to sessions. The album was cut primarily in single or double takes, capturing the raw energy and spontaneity characteristic of Stax's soul sound of the era. Recording took place across multiple sessions between January and September 1965, featuring Stax's house band, Booker T. and the M.G.'s, alongside saxophonist Jotis Thorne and other session musicians. The production approach emphasized live performance rather than overdubbing, utilizing the studio's distinctive equipment and acoustic qualities that helped define the Memphis soul sound. Released in September 1965, the album became one of Redding's most commercially successful works and is considered a landmark recording in soul music history.
