Pearl Jam recorded "Vs." at two locations in 1993: One on One Recording Studios in North Hollywood, California, and additionally at Maxi Priest's home studio. The album was produced by Pearl Jam themselves along with Rick Parashar, who had also worked on their debut "Ten." The band deliberately moved away from the polished sound of their first album, opting for a rawer, more experimental approach with heavier guitar tones and unconventional song structures. "Vs." was recorded relatively quickly compared to industry standards, reflecting the band's desire to capture a live, energetic feel. The album's production marked Pearl Jam's effort to assert creative control and move beyond the commercial blueprint that had made "Ten" a massive success.
