So

First released

Peter Gabriel's 1986 album "So" was recorded primarily at Real World Studios in Box, Wiltshire, England, the state-of-the-art facility Gabriel had recently constructed. The album was produced by Gabriel alongside Daniel Lanois and known engineer Richard Rainey, with Lanois bringing his signature atmospheric production style that emphasized experimentation with unconventional recording techniques and instruments. Gabriel extensively used digital recording technology and drum machines alongside traditional instruments, creating a sophisticated blend of world music influences, synthesizers, and organic sounds that defined the sonic character of the album. The production process involved meticulous layering and studio craftsmanship, with several tracks featuring innovative use of sampling and processing effects that were relatively advanced for mid-1980s production standards. "So" became Gabriel's most commercially successful album, partly due to its polished production and the hit single "Don't Give Up," and it established Real World Studios as an important creative hub for Gabriel's subsequent work.
