Punisher was recorded primarily at Rivers of Sound studio in Los Angeles during 2019, with additional sessions at other LA-area studios. The album was produced by Jack Antonoff, who worked closely with Bridgers to craft a more expansive and sonically layered sound compared to her debut. Antonoff and Bridgers employed detailed production techniques including string arrangements, synthesizers, and careful vocal layering to create the album's lush aesthetic. The recording took place during a creatively fertile period for Bridgers, following the success of her 2017 debut Stranger in the Alps. Punisher was released in June 2020, arriving during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic and becoming one of the year's most acclaimed indie albums.
