Pink Floyd

The Dark Side of the Moon

First released

The Dark Side of the Moon was recorded primarily at Abbey Road Studios in London between February 1972 and January 1973, with additional sessions at the Dick James Music Studios. The album was produced by Pink Floyd themselves in collaboration with engineer Alan Parsons, who played a crucial role in shaping the album's innovative sound design and mixing. The band utilized multitrack recording techniques and pioneering use of synthesizers, including the Mellotron and EMS VCS 3, to create layered atmospheric textures alongside traditional rock instrumentation. Producer Nigel Godrich's later remastering aside, the original sessions were characterized by meticulous attention to sonic detail and conceptual cohesion, with the album sequenced to play continuously without silence between tracks. Released in March 1973, the album became one of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed rock albums of all time, establishing new standards for studio production and concept album artistry.
