The Wall was recorded between November 1978 and July 1979 at multiple studios including the band's own Britannia Row Studio in London, as well as the Record Plant in Los Angeles. Producer Bob Ezrin, known for his work with Alice Cooper, collaborated extensively with Pink Floyd to realize Roger Waters' ambitious double album concept, bringing significant production expertise to the project. The album featured innovative recording techniques including the use of new synthesizer technology and extensive vocal layering to create its massive, layered sound. The production process was notably lengthy and expensive, reflecting the scale of Waters' vision for a rock opera about alienation and the pressures of fame. The album's recording coincided with and was influenced by the personal tensions within the band, particularly between Waters and the other members, which would contribute to Pink Floyd's eventual dissolution in the years following its release.
