Bossanova — Pixies

Pixies

Bossanova

First released

Pixies recorded Bossanova in 1990 at Samurai Studios in Los Angeles under the production of Gil Norton, who had also produced their previous album Doolittle. The band worked during a period of creative tension, with songwriter Black Francis developing new material that showed more melodic sophistication and studio experimentation compared to their earlier work. Norton employed extensive layering and polished production techniques that gave the album a more refined sound than Pixies' previous releases, utilizing the studio's advanced recording capabilities available at that time. The album was released in August 1990 and represented a deliberate shift toward more accessible songwriting while maintaining the band's signature dynamic range and unconventional arrangements. Recording took place amid the band's growing internal conflicts, which would eventually lead to their initial breakup in 1991, shortly after the album's release.
