Pixies recorded Bossanova at Euphonic Studios in Hollywood, California in 1990 with producer Gil Norton, who had previously worked with the band on Doolittle. The album was engineered by Ed Buller and marked a significant departure from the band's earlier sound, featuring cleaner production, more elaborate arrangements, and increased use of studio effects compared to their previous work. Norton and the band employed a more polished, controlled recording approach that emphasized melody and texture alongside the group's signature dynamics. The production reflected the band's artistic evolution while maintaining their distinctive style, and the album was released in August 1990 as their third studio record.
