Rid of Me — PJ Harvey

PJ Harvey

Rid of Me

First released

Rid of Me, PJ Harvey's second studio album, was recorded in 1993 at Townhouse Studios in London and RAK Studios, also in London. The album was produced by PJ Harvey herself alongside Steve Albini, a renowned engineer and producer known for his work with alternative and indie rock bands. Albini's production approach emphasized raw, unpolished textures and live instrumentation, contributing to the album's abrasive and visceral sonic character. The recording sessions featured a lean arrangement with Harvey primarily on vocals and guitar, supported by drummer Rob Ellis and bassist Ian Oliver, creating an intimate yet intense sound that departed from the more lush production of some contemporary alternative rock. Released in March 1994, Rid of Me established Harvey's artistic autonomy and helped solidify her reputation as an innovative and uncompromising artist within the alternative rock landscape of the 1990s.
