Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea was recorded primarily at Metropolis Studios in London during 2000, with additional work at other London facilities. The album was produced by PJ Harvey herself alongside Nigel Godrich, known for his work with Radiohead, and mixed by Nick Davis. The production marked a significant shift toward a more direct, rock-oriented sound compared to Harvey's previous work, featuring live band arrangements and streamlined songwriting. Recording took place over several months with a collaborative approach that emphasized spontaneity and immediate performance capture rather than extensive layering or post-production manipulation. The album's creation reflected the creative partnership between Harvey and Godrich, resulting in her most commercially successful work to date.
