In Absentia, Porcupine Tree's fifth studio album released in 2002, was recorded primarily at Miles Away Studios in Surrey, England, with additional recording at Signet Sound Studios. Producer Nigel Andrew worked alongside Steven Wilson, the band's frontman and primary creative force, who oversaw the songwriting and arrangement process. The album marked a significant shift toward a heavier, more direct rock sound compared to the band's previous work, with Wilson utilizing modern recording techniques and digital production methods while maintaining the band's progressive rock foundation. Recording took place over several months in 2001-2002, during a period when the band was gaining increased recognition in the metal and progressive rock communities. The album's polished yet heavy production style helped establish it as one of the band's most commercially successful releases and a landmark record in 21st-century progressive metal.
