In Absentia by Porcupine Tree was recorded between 2001 and 2002 at various studios including Miles Away Studios in Surrey, England, where the band worked primarily with producer/engineer Nick Davis. The album was engineered and mixed by Nick Davis along with Alan Parsons, who contributed to the mixing process and brought his extensive production experience to the project. Steven Wilson oversaw the creative direction while maintaining his role as the band's primary songwriter and guitarist. The recording process involved meticulous attention to detail in capturing the band's progressive metal sound with layered instrumentation and complex arrangements.
