Prince

1999

First released

Prince recorded "1999" primarily at his home studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota, between 1982 and 1983. He served as the primary producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist on the album, playing nearly all instruments himself, which was characteristic of his working method during this period. The album was recorded using analog tape technology and marked Prince's early experimentation with synthesizers and drum machines, particularly the Linn LM-1 drum computer, which defined much of its sonic character. "1999" was released in November 1982 on Warner Bros. Records and represented a significant commercial breakthrough for Prince, establishing his distinctive Minneapolis sound that blended funk, new wave, and R&B. The album's production reflected the early 1980s technological landscape while showcasing Prince's innovative approach to layering vocals and synthesizers.
