Purple Rain was recorded primarily at Sunset Sound Recorders and The Jacobs in Hollywood, California, between 1983 and 1984. Prince produced and engineered most of the album himself, with contributions from engineer Susan Rogers, who played a crucial role in the technical execution of the project. The recording process featured Prince playing the majority of instruments across the album's tracks, though The Revolution appeared on several songs. Prince utilized analog recording techniques combined with emerging digital technology, including the Linn LM-1 drum machine and various synthesizers, to create the album's distinctive sound. Released in 1984 alongside the film of the same name, Purple Rain became Prince's commercial breakthrough and a landmark achievement in blending rock, funk, and pop genres during the early MTV era.
