Dirty Mind was recorded primarily at Prince's home studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota during 1979 and early 1980. Prince played virtually all the instruments and sang all vocal parts himself, demonstrating his multi-instrumental abilities and establishing his characteristic production approach. The album was produced by Prince along with engineer Susan Rogers, who would become a key collaborator throughout his career. The recording featured a raw, minimalist sound compared to his later work, with direct and provocative lyrical content that reflected the independent spirit of the project. Released in October 1980, the album marked Prince's second release and helped establish his reputation as a fearless artist willing to push musical and lyrical boundaries.
