Lovesexy was recorded primarily at Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis between 1987 and 1988, with Prince serving as the main producer and playing most of the instruments himself. The album was engineered by Susan Rogers, who had become Prince's trusted technical collaborator, and represented a departure from the more guitar-driven sound of its predecessor Purple Rain. Prince utilized digital recording technology and synthesizers extensively throughout the sessions, creating a more polished and electronic sonic palette than previous works. The album's production reflected Prince's creative confidence and technical mastery during this period, as he maintained near-total control over all aspects of the recording process. Released in May 1988, Lovesexy came during a commercially successful phase for Prince and showcased his continued evolution as a multi-instrumentalist and studio innovator.
