It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back

First released

It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back was produced primarily by the Bomb Squad, a production team consisting of Eric "Vietnam" Sadler, Carl "Shocklee" Riddlehour, and Keith Shocklee, along with Chuck D and Flavor Flav. The album was recorded at various studios in New York, predominantly utilizing Shure SM57 microphones and heavy sampling techniques that layered multiple sources to create dense, aggressive sonic textures. The Bomb Squad employed innovative production methods including the strategic use of feedback, sirens, and dense sample collages to create what became a landmark in hip-hop production. Released in June 1987, the album's raw, confrontational sound and socially conscious lyrics established new technical and artistic standards for hip-hop at a time when the genre was still developing its production vocabulary. The production process was characterized by bold experimentation and rejection of conventional studio polish, prioritizing lyrical clarity and political impact over traditional musicality.
