R.E.M.

Automatic for the People

First released

Automatic for the People was recorded primarily at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York, and Capitol Studios in Los Angeles during 1991-1992. The album was produced by Scott Litt, who had collaborated with R.E.M. on previous projects, and marked a shift toward a more acoustic, introspective sound compared to the band's earlier work. The recording sessions featured live instrumentation with a focus on organic arrangements, including string arrangements that added orchestral depth to the tracks. The production emphasizes clarity and emotional intimacy, with vocals and acoustic guitars given prominent placement in the mix. Released in October 1992, the album became one of R.E.M.'s most successful and critically acclaimed works, establishing them as mainstream artists while maintaining artistic credibility.
