Hail to the Thief — Radiohead

Radiohead

Hail to the Thief

First released

Hail to the Thief was recorded between 2002 and 2003 across multiple locations including Radiohead's own studio and other facilities, following the band's extensive touring after Kid A and Amnestic. The album was produced by Nigel Godrich, who had collaborated with the band since OK Computer, and marked a deliberate shift toward more guitar-driven and politically engaged material compared to their previous electronic-heavy work. The band employed a varied approach to recording, incorporating both live instrumentation and electronic elements, with sessions spread across different studios to maintain creative flexibility. Thom Yorke's vocals were often processed and layered with various effects and production techniques characteristic of Godrich's production style, while the album's overall sound reflected the band's engagement with contemporary political events, particularly the 2003 Iraq War. The album was released in June 2003 and represented Radiohead's continued evolution while reintegrating rock instrumentation more prominently into their sonic palette.
