In Rainbows was recorded between 2005 and 2007 primarily at Radiohead's own studio, Tottenham Green, along with sessions at other locations including RAK Studios in London. The album was produced by Radiohead themselves with longtime collaborator Nigel Godrich, who engineered and mixed the majority of the material. The band employed a more spontaneous, live-based recording approach compared to the heavily electronic production of Kid A and Amnesiac, incorporating analog instrumentation and emphasizing ensemble performances. The album featured notable use of unconventional instruments and arrangements, including string sections and orchestral elements that were woven into the predominantly guitar-based sound. In Rainbows marked a significant moment in music history as it was released in October 2007 as a pay-what-you-wish digital download before the physical release, representing an early major-label artist experiment with alternative distribution models.
