OK Computer — Radiohead

Radiohead

OK Computer

First released

OK Computer was recorded primarily at EMI Studios in London and Canned Applause Studios in Oxfordshire between 1996 and 1997, with producer Nigel Godrich making his major label debut alongside the band. The album featured innovative production techniques including extensive use of multitrack recording, orchestral arrangements, and experimental guitar effects that pushed beyond the guitar-rock conventions of mid-1990s alternative music. Godrich and the band employed unconventional approaches such as recording in unusual spaces and layering diverse instrumental textures to create the album's complex, cinematic sound. Released in June 1997, OK Computer marked Radiohead's artistic departure from their grunge-influenced debut and established Godrich as a key creative collaborator who would remain central to the band's subsequent work. The album's production reflected emerging anxieties about technology and modernity that resonated with late-1990s cultural concerns, influencing alternative and art rock production standards for years to come.
