The King of Limbs was recorded primarily at Radiohead's own headquarters, Radiohead Studios in Oxford, between 2009 and 2011, with additional work at other locations including Miles Davis' former studio in New York. The band worked with longtime producer/engineer Nigel Godrich, who oversaw the album's creation with the band members themselves taking active production roles, particularly Thom Yorke. The recording process emphasized live instrumentation and organic sounds combined with electronic processing and manipulation, moving away from some of the guitar-driven approach of previous albums. The production reflected the band's interest in experimental pop and dance music influences, incorporating live drums, strings, and layered synthesizers. The album was released in February 2011 as a surprise digital download before physical copies became available.
