Genius Loves Company — Ray Charles

Ray Charles

Genius Loves Company

First released

Genius Loves Company was recorded between 2003 and 2004 at various locations including Capitol Studios and other facilities in Los Angeles, with Ray Charles working with producer Nigel Godrich, known for his work with Radiohead. The album featured Charles recording duets with contemporary and classic artists including B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, and Willie Nelson, among others, with each duet recorded separately rather than with both artists present simultaneously. The production utilized modern digital recording technology while maintaining the intimate vocal quality Charles was known for, and the sessions were carefully managed given Charles's advanced age and health considerations at the time. The album was released posthumously in 2004, several months after Ray Charles's death in June 2004, making it one of his final recording projects. Genius Loves Company became commercially successful and critically acclaimed, winning multiple Grammy Awards and introducing Charles's music to a new generation of listeners through its star-studded collaborations.
