Blood Sugar Sex Magik was recorded at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles between 1990 and 1991 and produced by Rick Rubin, who had previously worked with the band on their 1989 self-titled album. The album was engineered by Brendan O'Brien and mixed by the production team, featuring a notably raw and organic approach that contrasted with the heavily produced sound of mainstream funk and rap-rock at the time. Rubin's production philosophy emphasized live performances and minimal overdubbing, allowing the band's instrumental chemistry to shine through, particularly in extended jam sessions that became the foundation for many tracks. Released in September 1991, the album became the band's commercial breakthrough, eventually selling over 30 million copies worldwide and establishing them as major international artists during the grunge and alternative rock era.
