Producer Christopher Needham and engineer Nick Davis oversaw the sessions, with Bryan Ferry taking a more dominant role in the songwriting and artistic direction compared to previous albums. The album marked a significant shift toward sophisticated, polished synthesizer-driven pop production, utilizing state-of-the-art digital recording technology available in the early 1980s.
