Avalon, Roxy Music's ninth and final studio album, was recorded at multiple locations including Townhouse Studios and Air Studios in London during 1982. Producer Christopher Needham and engineer Nick Davis oversaw the sessions, with Bryan Ferry taking a more dominant role in the songwriting and artistic direction compared to previous albums. The album marked a significant shift toward sophisticated, polished synthesizer-driven pop production, utilizing state-of-the-art digital recording technology available in the early 1980s. Ferry's vocal arrangements were meticulously crafted with extensive layering and orchestral overdubs, creating the album's characteristic lush, atmospheric sound. Released in 1982, Avalon represented both a commercial peak and artistic departure from the band's earlier glam rock roots, becoming one of their most commercially successful releases.
