Sam & Dave

Hold On, I’m Comin’

First released

Hold On, I'm Comin' was recorded primarily at Stax Records' studio in Memphis, Tennessee between 1965 and 1966, during the height of the soul label's creative output. The album was produced by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, the songwriting duo who also penned most of the material, with engineer Tom Dowd contributing to some sessions. The recordings featured the core Stax house band, including guitarist Steve Cropper and bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, creating the label's signature deep soul sound with live instrumentation and minimal overdubbing. The album's production exemplified Stax's straightforward approach to recording, prioritizing raw performances and authentic groove over studio manipulation. Released in 1966, the album became a landmark work of 1960s soul music and established Sam & Dave as one of Stax Records' most successful acts.
