Columbia — KC 30130

Abraxas was recorded in 1970 at Columbia Studios in San Francisco and other locations, following the massive success of Santana's 1969 self-titled debut. The album was produced by Fred Lewis and Santana, with significant input from the band members themselves who were instrumental in shaping the sound and arrangements. The recording benefited from the band's increased confidence and tighter musicianship following their Woodstock performance, allowing for more ambitious arrangements blending Latin percussion, rock, and jazz influences. The production utilized the band's signature approach of layering congas, timbales, and bongos with Carlos Santana's guitar work and the horn section, creating the Latin rock sound that would define the album's commercial and critical success. Released in September 1970, Abraxas became one of the best-selling albums of the year and established Santana as major innovators in fusing Latin music with rock.
