Caravanserai was recorded in 1972 at the Record Plant in Los Angeles and produced by Santana and Denny Dias. The album marked a significant shift in the band's sound toward jazz fusion and world music influences, incorporating more complex instrumental arrangements and less reliance on vocals compared to their previous work. Recording engineer Roy Halee, known for his work with Simon and Garfunkel, contributed to the album's polished production. The sessions featured expanded instrumentation including keyboards, strings, and various percussion instruments that reflected the band's growing musical sophistication during the early 1970s. Released in October 1972, Caravanserai demonstrated Santana's artistic evolution and became a landmark fusion album of the era.
