Ágætis byrjun, Sigur Rós's debut album, was recorded in 1997 at Smekkleysa studio in Reykjavik, Iceland, with producer Hidemasa Morita and the band members themselves overseeing the production. The album was recorded relatively quickly and with a limited budget, contributing to its raw yet ethereal sound characterized by bowed guitar, ambient textures, and Jónsi's distinctive vocals sung partly in Hopelandic, the band's invented language.
