Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab — MFSL 1-173

Bridge Over Troubled Water was recorded primarily at Columbia Records' studios in New York and Los Angeles between 1969 and 1970, with producer Roy Halee overseeing the sessions alongside Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. The album marked a departure from the duo's previous folk-rock sound, incorporating more elaborate orchestral arrangements and studio production techniques, with string arrangements by Philip Ramone and orchestration by John Williams. Key technical innovations included the use of multitrack recording and sophisticated layering to create the lush, polished sound that defined the title track and other arrangements on the album. The recording sessions took place during a period of creative tension between Simon and Garfunkel, yet resulted in one of the best-selling albums of all time, released in January 1970. The production reflected the duo's ambitions to create sophisticated pop music that transcended their folk-rock origins, establishing new sonic possibilities for the genre.
