Columbia — KCS 9529

Bookends was recorded between 1967 and 1968 at Columbia Records' studios in New York, primarily under the production guidance of Roy Halee and Paul Simon, with engineer Roy Halee overseeing much of the technical work. The album marked a shift toward more introspective and orchestrated arrangements compared to their previous work, featuring string arrangements and more elaborate studio production techniques. The recording sessions took place during a period of creative tension between Simon and Garfunkel, contributing to the album's themes of aging and life passages. Columbia Records' state-of-the-art facilities and Halee's innovative engineering approach helped achieve the album's polished, layered sound that defined late 1960s folk-rock production. The album was released in April 1968 and became a major commercial and critical success, establishing Simon & Garfunkel's mature artistic direction.
